What is an authenticator app and why do I need it?

Authenticator apps are used for two-factor authentication (also called dual-factor authentication, or two-step verification), which is a method of confirming users' claimed identities by using a combination of 2 different factors.
It is a security layer in addition to your username and password to prevent your online accounts being accessed by unauthorised users.
Authenticator apps are considered more secure than texting, as they offer flexibility when you are traveling to a place without cellular service.
Popular options include Authy, Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator.
